Happy Spring everyone!  The snow banks are few are far between now and the preparation for gardens and lawns will be soon underway.  Something to keep in mind when shopping for your gardening needs is that Minesing Central School has a fundraiser with Bradford Greenhouse.  If you tell the cashier prior to your purchase that you would like your purchase to benefit the Minesing School, sales from April 15-October 15 will benefit by way of a gift card for the purchase of Bradford Greenhouse products for school improvements and special events.  What a great way to help out the school.

I recently ran into a high school friend I hadn’t seen in many years at our local Cicco’s restaurant (yes Steve I’m speaking of you) and we got to talking about how many people have returned to our area to raise their families.  I think it speaks volumes of how we were raised and how we too would like to give our children the same opportunities of the rural community upbringing.  How can you go wrong raising your family here?  You have neighbours and even teenagers who will wave as you drive by.  In Barrie, people just look at you strange and wonder who the heck you are for the rest of the day.  Those same neighbours will keep an eye on your home if you happened to be away for any period of time or snow blow your driveway with their tractors if you are in need without any want for repayment.  It is a comforting feeling to have those you know keeping a watch out for your kids as they ride around the neighbourhood if they happen to fall off their bike or need a reminder to watch for cars.  The saying is true…”It takes a community to raise a child”.  Minesing is that kind of community.

I’m also going to mention that our famous Cicco’s Restaurant is now open Monday’s.  What a great convenience to those who dislike Mondays, well now you can make a quick call at 705-722-0001 or visit them to be served with a smile by their courteous wait staff.

Minesing Women’s Institute Needs your Help – Since 1904 the women of the WI have worked hard in the community.  Over the years we have served hundreds of dinners for meetings, weddings and community events, provided funeral luncheons, held bake sales and teas. With these funds we supported the 4H program, school awards, Simcoe County Museum along with numerous other projects. We have kept a history of community events called the Tweedsmuir Books and started the Minesing library.

We are proud of our accomplishments and would like to have a lasting memorial for our past members.  With the permission of the Minesing Union Cemetery Board we plan to install a concrete bench in the cemetery.  This memorial will honor the memory all Women’s Institute Members buried in the cemetery.

We have been saving and fund raising but the cost for this project is substantial and we need help to bring this to completion.  We are asking for donations from anyone who has a mother, sister, grandmother, special aunt or friend that was a WI member and would like contribute to this lasting memorial.

We meet for interesting informative meetings held the first Tuesday of every month. If you are interested in donating to this project please contact Linda Bowen 705-737-1365 or Phyllis Schaefer 705-728-8431.

Farewell St. Peter’s Anglican Church

Friends and neighbours crowded into St. Peter’s Anglican Church in Minesing for the final Service of Celebration of the deconsecration of the church on Sunday April 7, 2013.  The service was celebrated by The Right Reverend George Elliott, area Bishop of York-Simcoe and The Reverend Janet Mitchell, Priest-in-Charge of St Peter’s. Members of the congregation assisted with the service.

Debbie Giffen and Sharon Partridge shared reflections about how the church has been part of the circle of life for St Peter’s families.  Cherished memories of baptisms, Sunday School, weddings, coffee parties and church dinners will remain in the hearts and minds of many.  St. Peter’s Anglican Church has served the community of Minesing for 128 years. This was our chance to celebrate our history and as the doors closed a chance to say farewell to this hallowed place.

There will be a Closing Garage Sale at St Peter’s, 2412 Ronald Road on Saturday April 20, 2013 from 9:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. The doors are closing forever so everything must go!

Until next time, if the colds and flus that are going around haven’t got you yet, good luck!  Because I know that people outside of our area receive copies of this to keep current on our local issues, I would like to say hi to all those people too!
